This is a gorgeous hand-painted Italian ceramic jug.  The hand painted design is 'Zafiro', a striking design of fruit and foliage on a black background.  

On the base of the jar the artist has inscribed by hand the where the jar has been made and painted.  'MOD' stands for 'Majolica of Deruta' and below it is 'Deruta, Italy' followed by 'Dip. A Mano', which translates from Italian to 'Painted by Hand'.

The jar measures 210mm in height and and 160mm in diameter.  The volumetric capacity of the jug is just under 2 litres.
