May UpdateOur thoughts are turning towards Italy more intensely than usual at the moment! We are preparing for our next visit.
This visit, if things work out for us, we hope to be in a small village in Abruzzo for some time. We are looking forward to enjoying Italian life away from the tourist trails, and we are doing some reading about cultural norms so we don't inadvertantly tread on toes! It's so easy to assume that things we take for granted are the right thing in another country. For example, we normally as a courtesy would take a bottle of wine if invited out to dinner here. In Italy that can be experienced as an insult by your hosts... So, for those of you that are intending to spend some time in Italy, this month's story is a good summary of some 'Do's' and 'Don'ts' so you can get the most enjoyment from your time there. Fiona from Wellington Wins the Murano Glass Clown!Thank you to everyone who entered our competition to win the large Murano Glass Clown! Fiona from Wellington was the lucky winner and the clown has gone to enjoy a new life in the Wellington Italian community. The photo here shows one of his introductions to his new family! There are numerous families in Wellington whose ancestors emigrated to New Zealand from Stromboli, one of the Aeolian Islands off the Southern Italian coast which has the most active volcano in the world. New Zealand and Italy have a shared history now which is very interesting and documented in a book 'Alla Fine del Mondo' (At the End of the Earth). I am reading it at the moment. It is sad to hear how these people suffered during the Second World War, when many Italian men were rounded up and incarcerated on Somes Island in Wellington Harbour during the war years. This article will be not only interesting for first time travellers but also for those people who have already been there. Do make a good impression. Bella Figura is a term that translates roughly to making a good impression. This means so much more than just dressing well, though that is important too. It means saying hello when you enter a store, making sure your arms are covered when visiting a church and even having correct change when paying for your cup of coffee.
