It is hard to believe that it has now been a full 12 months since we released our first new format newsletter in July 2012.

This month's newsletter is being released quite late due to the fact that we are in Italy and have been very busy with the latest Dream of Italy project - establishing two little houses (combined into one) in a small town in the Peligna Valley in Abruzzo, 2 hours out of Rome. This has been a very rich experience so far, totally different to a tourist experience. There are no tourists here so basic knowledge of Italian is helpful. The local people in our little village of 1,000 perched on the side of a hill have been so welcoming and our story this month gives a little insight into this ... a story that will have a lot of chapters no doubt!

We have also visited suppliers in various parts of Italy and experienced the massive contrast, for instance, between life in rural Italy and the throngs clogging St Mark's Square in Venice! Guaranteeing the authenticity of the products we sell is vital to our business, and making personal visits to our suppliers is key to ensuring we can always do this. Many of our suppliers are now friends and welcome us so warmly: they take very good care of us.

This visit we have found some new top quality Murano glass suppliers. We are delighted to be able to bring in some beautiful new items to keep our product range vibrant and changing.

Italian Story- Casa in Abruzzo

"...she turned the lights on and made us a wonderful panino each with prosciutto and mozzarella. As we devoured them, an old man with no teeth came in for his daily coffee. He was interested to meet the foreigners, and when we’d chatted a little he said ‘you belong here now, you are part of the Prezza family, one of us'."

Italian Recipe- Dolomiti Apple Strudel

"This is my favourite apple strudel, once again from my book Sweet As..., page 20. I learned to make this from my mother, and I like it because it is 'rustic', not fancy like the patisseries' versions, and barely sweet: a real Dolomiti mountain food. In fact I prefer this to any other apple pie or cake or flan!"

Last month's newsletter featured the topic of 'Slow Travel'. I must say I love it! Driving on country roads at 50km/hr and slowing down for an 'Ape' or a tractor as you wind through beautiful countryside feeds the soul! Slow Travel is highly recommended!
